Garden Notes- March 15
Spring weather always keeps us on our toes.
This week brought a little bit of everything — warm days, heavy snow, wind, and now some bitter cold settling in for a few nights.
Life in the garden this time of year means watching the forecast closely and doing what we can to protect the work already underway.
Weather in the Garden
Thursday night we received around five to six inches of heavy wet snow.
At one point nearly two inches fell within an hour, and I was out brushing snow off the tunnels around 11 pm to keep the weight from building up.
Strong winds were forecast as well, so earlier in the day I spent time tightening the straps and securing the plastic on the tunnels.
Wind is usually the biggest concern in the garden. Snow can actually help a little by weighing things down and tightening the plastic.
Another small storm moved through last night and left just a light dusting.
Now a couple very cold nights are ahead before temperatures warm again later this week.
Spring in northern Minnesota rarely moves in a straight line.
Inside the Greenhouse
Inside the starter greenhouse and indoor grow room plants are getting bigger and requiring more space.
Onions are getting their regular watering and the first tomatoes have been transplanted into larger pots.
The first true leaves appeared this week on peppers and eggplants. Next it will be their turn to be transplanted into larger pots
Also seeded this week are the first of many plantings sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower and kohlrabi.
Looking Ahead
Even though there isn't anything to harvest yet, the season has already begun.
Greenhouses being built, seedlings are growing, and the garden will slowly begin filling in over the coming weeks.
I'll continue to share updates here as the season gets underway.
