Garden Notes- March 8

Spring is starting at Midheaven Garden

The warm weather this past week has brought a lot of activity back to the garden.

Even though there isn’t anything ready to harvest yet, the season has already started behind the scenes.

Inside the greenhouse the seedling room is getting busy, and outside we’ve begun working on one of the bigger projects for the year.

The Seedling Room Is Getting Busy

Inside, the season has already started.

Onions are getting their regular watering, and the first round of tomatoes are being transplanted into larger pots.

Peppers and eggplants have just begun to emerge — tiny green shoots pushing up through the soil.

Every one of those seedlings will eventually become the vegetables you'll see later this season.

Building the New Greenhouse

One of the biggest projects right now is putting up a new greenhouse.

I actually purchased it unexpectedly last January after an impromptu search on Facebook Marketplace. Last fall I had made a list of projects and improvements I hoped to complete before the start of the next growing season — and a new greenhouse wasn’t on that list.

Most used greenhouses need to be taken apart before they can be moved. It’s a lot of work, but the upside is that you learn how every piece fits together as you disassemble it.

This greenhouse was different — it was already taken apart.

That saved a lot of labor, but it also made me a little nervous. When you buy something from photos, you always wonder if all the pieces will actually be there when the truck arrives.

The price was right, and the seller even offered to deliver it from Iowa. It was hard to pass up, even though I wasn’t sure I’d have time to put it up this year.

But this week we started raising the bows and bringing the structure back to life.

At the Garden Table

Beginning this season, we’ll also be sharing a monthly note called At the Garden Table.

These stories are written by my mom, Anne, and focus on cooking, growing, and the connections that happen around food — especially between grandparents and grandchildren.

Each month she’ll share a short reflection and sometimes a recipe from her kitchen.

If you enjoy cooking with fresh ingredients or passing along food traditions to the next generation, I think you’ll enjoy her stories.

Looking Ahead

It’s still early in the season, but the garden is slowly waking up again.

I’ll continue sharing updates here in Garden Notes as the season unfolds.
